 The Way of God: Abolition

The Basis

The Pro-Life movement agrees with abolition in that human dignity comes from the fact that we are created in God's image.

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 ESV

But where the disagreement comes is how abortion should be treated regarding this truth.  Below are listed two major Pro-Life positions they hold and say are consistent with scripture.

Mercy vs True Mercy

The Pro-Life position does not support treating abortion as murder in all cases. You can look up any Pro-Life organization and they will describe abortion as murder, but refuse to support laws that would prosecute all principal agents in an abortion as though they had committed murder, usually listing mothers as the exception for prosecution.

The argument usually is about mercy and how we need to apply this here. However, there is a problem with this understanding of mercy.  Forgiving someone who has sinned and not causing them to pay their just restitution, whether that is a fine or their life, is indeed merciful, however it is bastardization of mercy to tell someone to go on committing more murder because we do not wish to prosecute you.  God's mercy never involves allowing individuals to continue to harm others.  A judge who knows that a killer is going to go on killing is not merciful when he withholds the gavel of justice. There are a passages that actually support this understanding:

How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Psalm 82:2 ESV

He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 ESV

The word kindness can often be translated to mercy as well and can refer to a "kind mercy" in essence.  How do we love justice and mercy at the same time? Well it doesn't mean turning a blind eye to the wicked as Psalm 82 says.  So that can't be it.  See mercy is defined as the withholding of punishment someone deserves. The problem is there has to be a punishment to withhold.  It is actually contrary to mercy and justice to show partiality to a group of people harming and oppressing another.  If you do not establish a just sentence for a grave evil someone commits against another, no mercy can be offered because there is no punishment to withhold.

Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! Isaiah 10:1-2 ESV

God is very clear in all these passage.  We must love justice.  We must love mercy.  We must walk humbly with our God.  This isn't about only following the parts of scripture we like but rather set ourselves aside and allowing God to guide our path and understanding.  If you continue to turn your face away from the murder of the most innocent among us God will also set his face against you.

And if the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, then I will set my face against that man and against his clan and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in whoring after Molech. Leviticus 20:4-5 ESV

To Compromise With Evil

Another path the pro-life movement takes is incrementalism: the idea that we need to gradually regulate abortion until is abolished.  A commonly listed passage to support this is:

He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so... Matthew 19:8 ESV

The argument is that this passage clearly shows that God regulated the evil of divorce and so we can also practice this strategy in regulating other evils. God being perfect demonstrates this idea to us, and we should as best we can imitate His ways.  Agreed. However there is a major issue with this idea. He never implements this with oppression or murder of a group of people. In fact just go through the history of Israel's wars that God ordered they wipe out.  These cultures practiced infanticide regularly and God's judgement was they all die, including the ones who allowed it even if they didn't do it themselves.

Justice, and only justice, you shall follow, that you may live and inherit the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 16:20

This Deuteronomy passage sums up for us the importance of Justice and only Justice. God doesn't say we can pursue injustice while pursuing justice. This is further exemplified in Isaiah.

Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! Isaiah 10:1-2

He in all literal terms tells us to not decree iniquitous decrees, to stop writing oppression.  But when we write a law for example a heartbeat bill, which is usually around 6 weeks, is still an iniquitous decree that gives legal protection to people murdering children for the first 6 weeks of their existence.  There is no provision in God's law that says "We can do evil in the pursuit of good." Instead as he instructed Israel:

Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the Lord, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. Amos 5:15

So Why Abolition?

The five tenets of abolition:
Gospel Centered - The Gospel is our primary source of truth and abolitionists share it unashamedly.
Providential - God is our provident king and we trust in his spiritual truth not man's pragmatism.
Church Driven - God established the Church to work for His glory and his ways and is obligated to battle evil.
Biblical - God's Word is the truth and is in conflict with the world. It provides our basis for valuing human life.
Uncompromising - Abolition rejects any law that regulates or manages evil on the way to abolishing it.
